Society and Civilization through the Lens of Human Constants is the fourth volume in the five-volume Human Constants Theory Article Series. It extends the scope of analysis from social systems to society, culture, and civilization.

Civilizations have emerged, grown, transformed, and in some cases collapsed or been reconstructed in new forms throughout history. This volume seeks to examine these complex processes from a different angle: their relationship to enduring human needs and tendencies.

Within the theory's framework, survival, connection, meaning, and order are treated as four central dimensions for studying the organization of societies and civilizations. The important issue is not the separate existence of each dimension, but how they interact and remain in balance.

Purpose and Place in the Series

From this perspective, differences among societies and civilizations do not necessarily mean differences in fundamental human needs. They may result from differences in the ways these needs are met, the environmental, historical, and cultural conditions involved, and the ways relationships among the four constants are regulated.

This volume provides the theoretical groundwork for using Human Constants in historical and civilizational analysis, and guides the reader toward the next stage of the series: measurement and testing of the theory.
